Timber shakes
BRE (Building Research Establishment) is an independent, research-based consultancy, testing and training organisation, operating in the built environment and associated industries. A guide to the use of urban timber (FB 50) was written by Geoff Cooper and published by BRE on 31 July 2012.
The guide describes shakes as:
| A separation or breaking of the wood fibres caused by stresses in the standing tree or by felling and log handling. Shakes are not caused by shrinkage during drying. |
NB The term 'shakes' can also refer to a form of roof cladding hand-split from a wooden block using a mallet and froe, and typically used on conservation projects and listed buildings. See Shingle roofing for more information.
